Rising region of Antarctica

May 9th, 2012
Making sure that ESA’s CryoSat mission is delivering accurate data to work out precisely how the thickness of Earth’s ice is changing is a continuing effort, and one that takes teams of scientists to some of the harshest environments on the planet.
These particular campaigns were carried out on a desolate plateau known as the blue ice region, which lies on the edge of Antarctica. As its name suggests, this unique region features a vast expanse of polished blue ice, devoid of snow.
It is precisely this lack of snow and unusual icy surface that makes the region very useful for determining the accuracy of CryoSat’s radar altimeter.
The lack of snow in this part of Antarctica means that radar signals emitted by CryoSat’s altimeter bounce straight off the glistening ice and back to the satellite. The height of the ice is then determined from the difference in time between the signal being emitted and received.
Since ice is usually covered by a layer of snow, the signal normally has to penetrate this top layer before reaching the ice – a fact that might influence CryoSat’s measurements of ice height.
Measurements from the hard shiny surface of the blue ice are therefore extremely valuable for checking against CryoSat’s data.
While the field experiments are designed for validation purposes, the analysis of measurements from two campaigns in 2008-09 and 2010-11 has shown some surprising results: it reveals that this part of Antarctica actually increased in height by an average of 9 cm between the two periods.
Scientists from the Alfred Wegner Institute also took measurements from an aircraft with an instrument that simulates CryoSat’s radar altimeter. Scientists from the Technical University (TU) of Dresden braved extreme weather to map subtle changes in the height of the ice over 2500 sq km. The measurements were taken on the ground with sophisticated GPS equipment towed by snowmobiles.
After analysis of the data collected in the campaigns, and the fact that other datasets going back 20 years are available, the scientists determined changes in the height of the ice for three different periods.
In 1991-2000, there was a drop of about 5 cm, a trend that continued in 2000-08. However, the third period in 2008-10 shows this unexpected rise.

Classic Games gets an upgrade

Apr 30th, 2012

The three classic games Jak & Daxter, the Precursor Legacy, Jak II and JAk III that were originally launched on PS2 have been given a 3D look along with HD feel. Do the games developed will get applauds from the crowd?

The Precursor Legacy is a light hearted game with standard environments which usually all the games have. The game Jak II is a bit continuation of the first one with Jak being captured and tortured. The add-on to the game is GTA style elements and voice modulation of Jak. Jak III removes all free-roaming elements and ads shooting to it.
All the three games were quite liked by the Audience and the thin to watch how much they like the newer version of it. The HD effect is nice done with not much of 3D effect. The best part is it gives 3 games in one pack.

All three games are still enjoyable and have well stood the test of time. It’s incredible how much of that humour still sounds fresh. The HD treatment is well done overall. The 3D, however doesn’t add much to the game. The good thing here is that unlike most HD compilations, this one gives you three different games in the package.

IT security French Internet mismanage their passwords

Mar 31st, 2011

According to a Symantec study, French Internet users spend too careless about choosing passwords. A boon for cyber-criminals.

Symantec released the results of a study conducted on its behalf by YouGov among French Internet users. It shows that management of passwords becomes really problematic, notes Silicon.fr .

Thus, users must take an average of five passwords per day, despite the presence of tools to not re-enter it each login.

To address this constraint, 45% of users choose passwords that are easy to guess: the name of their pet, partner, date of birth, etc.. Information easy to find by browsing the profiles in social networks.

Worse, 52% of French Internet users use the same password for at least half of their online accounts. If one of these services were to be corrupt, a whole set of Web sites would be open to hackers. In the end, only 21% of Internet users make the effort to create strong passwords, mixing random numbers and letters.

Ideally, it should use strong passwords and to renew them regularly. Symantec admits, however, that applying such a policy has an impact on business, estimated at 125 million hours of productivity per year for all French companies.

Impact can be reduced by adopting advanced technologies for strong authentication . whose firm has done – you guessed it – a specialty.
